The Six Stages of Dementia

  1. Very Mild Cognitive Decline - This stage can be very hard to recognize as it is less noticeable than more severe stages and includes forgetting names and phrases or beginning to misplace objects.
  2. Mild Cognitive Decline - This stage can begin to become more noticeable, as seniors might notice they have a hard time solving puzzles or playing card games, while also experiencing forgetfulness, repeating questions and having trouble concentrating.
  3. Moderate Cognitive Decline - This stage is typically when people are diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. At this stage you should be consulting with a medical professional and symptoms include social withdrawal, moodiness, trouble with everyday tasks, and non-responsiveness.
  4. Somewhat Severe Cognitive Decline - At this stage, an in-home caretaker or a memory loss community may be required for a loved one. Symptoms of this phase may include confusion, loss of memory of personal details and current events, and reduced problem solving ability.
  5. Severe Cognitive Decline - At this stage loved ones may experience trouble sleeping, obsessive behavior, paranoia, delusions, anxiety and difficulty recognizing loved ones.
  6. Very Severe Cognitive Decline - This stage is often referred to as ‘late stage dementia’ or ‘severe Alzheimer’s’ disease. This stage includes motor and communication impairment and the loss of the ability to walk or speak.
