It is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. So here we go with our 10 must follow tips for healthy aging that will help you to stay physically fit and emotionally healthy.

“Health is wealth” is an old English adage and couldn’t be further from the truth. If we are in good health, then it is as good as being the king of England. Keeping ourselves in good health is a duty to us, our families, and our communities. We owe it to ourselves to keep good health, make the right choices and avoid being a burden on others.

As we age, our bodies and metabolism change. Our health and fitness need to evolve with age. Our body’s reactions to various stimuli, food change. However, Aging can be beautiful as long as one keeps good health and is as independent as can be in all situations.

We list 10 Essential lifestyle health tips for seniors which will aid in maintaining the optimal lifestyle we all deserve:

Eat Healthily – The stomach is often called the hospital of the body. We are what we eat. Growing old brings changes in the digestive system and our metabolism system. Eating a balanced diet with a focus on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts which are high in fiber is ideal. It is best to take proteins and carbohydrates in moderation. Raw foods are the buzzword nowadays, so it could be eating lots of salad with low-fat dressings. Junk food and sugar-based products need to be kept minimal if not eliminated totally.

Exercise – Getting older does not mean reducing or giving up on exercise. Find a fun exercise that suits us and stick to it. For some yoga works, for others it is swimming and for some others, it could be brisk walking in the neighborhood parks. Any form of exercise which gets your heartbeat racing is good for the heart, body and to lose weight. Exercise at least 4-5 times a week for a minimum of 30 minutes.

Sleep well – Sleeping well is a must. It rejuvenates the body, the mind, and the soul. Though seniors sleep less with age, it should be given due importance. Create the right mood for sleep, use calming methods to induce sleep, reduce use of electronic gadgets and stick to a sleep routine.

Social connectivity – As we age, our social circles shrink. We turn inwards and often feel or neglected. This impacts physical, mental and emotional well-being. It’s been proven that socially connected people are healthier and take better care of themselves. Therefore, please engage with friends, neighbors, relatives or sign up for classes, etc. Visit a park and make new friends.

Keep the brain active - Learn a new instrument or language, pick up a new active hobby such as cooking or gardening, do crossword puzzles or Sudoku. Keep your brain active, engaged and stimulate its pathways.

Healthy teeth – Visit a dentist once in 6 months. Good dental hygiene can protect your teeth and gums.

No drinking and smoking – This health tip is for everyone, irrespective of age. Smoking and drinking have never done anyone any good. To break the habit, turn to support networks, counselors and de-addiction devices in the market.

Regular health checkups- We all must undergo a comprehensive health check-up at least once a year, two if we are older. Preventive screenings and regular examination are crucial in our well-being. These checkups can show cholesterol levels, heart problems, breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men.

Drink lots of water – Water, water and water. We cannot ignore the myriad benefits of drinking adequate water daily and being hydrated. Colas, sugary drinks, teas, and coffees are not replacements for good old aqua. 6-8 glasses a day of water is good.

Vitamin D – Get your daily dose of Vitamin D in your lawn, park or in a natural setting. Otherwise, supplements are easily accessed to keep bones healthy and you strong.
