Expert Advice For Preventing Falls

One of the biggest concerns which come with age is falls and the resultant injuries such as hip fractures or even fatalities. As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 4 people 65 and above falls each year in America. These falls are markers of ill health and declining cognitive functions. Falls are caused by a variety of reasons such as age, medication use, cognitive impairment, and sensory deficits. However, all is not lost. We have some expert advice on steps that can be taken to keep you safe and prevent falls.

Remove clutter – The easiest way to secure the home is to keep it clutter-free.  Remove all items which can cause falls from all parts of the home especially pathways and staircases.

Remove tripping hazards – Houses are potentially lethal for all members residing in them. A thorough evaluation by family members or professionals can reveal startling information.  Carpets, rugs, stools, damaged floorboards; children’s toys are major causes of injuries. They should be repaired or removed.

Install grab bars and handrails – These devices must be installed as they are crucial for safety especially in bathrooms and staircases. Get them installed in every bathroom near toilet bowls and bathtubs/shower areas.  They prevent falls and serious injuries. Most injuries as research have shown occurs in bathrooms followed by kitchens.

Avoid loose clothing – Go for better fitting and properly stitched clothing as compared to loose-fitting, baggy clothes or those who have frills that dangle or touch the ground.

Supportive shoes – Wear good quality and fitting pair of shoes especially those who come with anti-skid/ slipping technology. Socks are hazardous as they are slippery.

Light the house – Make sure all parts of the house and the area around it are properly lit. Install brighter light bulbs and night lights in bedrooms, hallways, and bathrooms for better assistance.

Walk slowly – Practice mindfulness, walk slowly, measure each step.  When getting up from a sitting or lying position, do it slowly and pause for a few seconds.

Non-slippery flooring – Install non-slippery flooring in bathrooms, porches, and kitchen. They will keep everyone safe.  They could be in fact installed all over the home so everyone is safe at all times.

Exercises – It’s important to exercise daily to be fit, healthy and agile.  This can be extended to include strength and balance exercises to minimize the risk of falls.

Stay hydrated - The link between dehydration and falls is known to few. Low levels of liquids the body in results in dizziness and light headiness. Therefore to avoid falls drink 6-8 glasses of water daily. Soft drinks, alcohol, tea, and coffee are no substitute for water. Oral rehydration salts may be mixed with water to ensure that the body’s vital salts remain intact.

 The use of these experts' advice for preventing falls will help to keep everyone safe especially the elders in the family who are the most at risk.
