When To Choose In Home Care

Posted 01-05-2021 by Kristi Holm, LPN

Deciding on senior in-home care for your loved one can be a daunting task. There are a variety of factors to consider, including family circumstances, budget, time, age-related concerns and the specific needs and wants of the individual needing care.

An in-home caregiver may be your best option if you are looking for a solution that supports your aging spouse, parent or close relative in a cost-effective way. Ultimately, this decision will depend on the health and safety of the individual and the level of inherent risks they face without this specialized care.

Many common scenarios prompt individuals to choose in-home care, including:
  1. Mobility or Health Complications: Many health challenges can be effectively managed at home by an in-home caregiver. These caregivers can provide transportation to medical appointments, medication reminders, fall prevention and other services to assist your loved one.
  2. Assistance With Daily Tasks: In-home caregivers can provide assistance to your loved one by helping out with basic tasks such as administering medication and medical tests, nutritional support and therapy regimens. This type of care is designed to give your loved one a greater degree of independence, allowing them to perform daily tasks that are vital to their ongoing health and safety.
  3. Support For Family Caregivers: In-home caregivers can provide a respite for family caregivers, allowing them to focus on their immediate family responsibilities and prevent burnout. This type of care can be scheduled for a short- or long-term basis, allowing a caregiver as much of a break as they need.
  4. Specialized Care At Home: Senior care facilities can separate elderly spouses if they have different medical needs, which can be stressful and unpleasant. In-home care can prevent this by allowing personalized care for each spouse without separating them, allowing them to spend more time together.

People often confuse in-home private duty care with skilled home care. In-home private duty care refers to when a private pay individual works in your home for a block of time to assist with cooking, housekeeping and personal care issues. Skilled home care includes physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, social work and nursing — and is covered through your insurance with or without a co-pay.

If any of these scenarios are similar to what you are experiencing at this stage with a spouse, parent or close relative, in-home care may be right for you.
